Amy Selner and Candice Leuthold, participants in the first IU South Bend Freedom Summer trip in 2000, came back transformed. They turned their passion into action, approaching their teacher, Les Lamon, with a plan. The Civil Rights Institute, as it was then called, would be a, “tool to be used by the surrounding community, school corporations, as well as the civil organizations in their efforts to inform and educate populations on race relations both historically and present day."
