THREE NEW COURSES FOR SPRING '91
W201 Women & Ethnicity: Confronti ng Bi ases Because we live in a society based on white supremacy, many forms of racism exist. Because the U.S. is a "melting pot" nation, other prejudices also afflict us. Because the U.S.is an industrial society promoting competition, there are a vast number of hierarchies that thrive on the scapegoating of "inferiors." W201 is designed t o help us recognize, resist, and overcome destructive biases that devalue people for their race, religion, ethnicity, sex, and sexual preference. It is recommended for students who want to deal with internal 'prejudices (which all of us have to some degree) and for students who want to learn about the mechanisms of bias. The course is for both men and women. A high percentage of class time will be spent in discussion. The class closes at 25, and there are no prerequisites. Instructor: Dora J . Reynolds.
R364 Feminist Critique of Western Religiops Western religions today are going through varying degrees of selfcriticism and change--much of it prompted by feminist analysis. This exciting new· course will examine major Western religious concepts and texts, asking to what degree many feminist criticisms are valid. Both standard and feminist texts will be used, including The Laughter of A:ehrodite by Carol P. Christ. There are no prerequisites, but students should be in their junior year or higher. The class closes at 25. Instructor: Ted. Hengesbach.,

W402 Feminist Literary Criticism W402 is recommended for seniors interested in feminist theory or in 'i

literary ctiticism. At the university, the current feminist movement b~gan in literature departments, and feminist literary criticism conveyed basic social critiques that have been picked up by most other disciplines. The instructor will provide enough explanatory background so that all senior students, regardless of background, can comfortably participate in the seminar. The seminar .closes at 10. Advance registration is strongly recommended, as is prior consultation with the instructor. Instructor: Eileen T. Bender.

Program: NWSA '90 Postmortem. Students who attended the conference in June at Akron, Ohio, will discuss their reactions. At 12:30, the Women's
Studies Club will elect officers and representatives to serve on the Women's
Studies Faculty Committee. It is important for us to have student input as we
plan future courses and programs. Please participate in this important
election. Pamela Mims and Cathy Stein, the outgoing officers of the Club,
will be in charge of this part of the program.

KOKOMO ANNUAL STUDENT CONFERENCE
The Third Annual LU. Student Women's Studies Conference will take place once again in the handsome new facility at Kokomo in the spring semester. Although it will be only the third conference, its success has been so great that it feels like an old W.S. tradition.
We want to identify presenters at the end of the current fall semester to give students time to revise and then present their work here {Feb. 13 & 27) as preparation for Kokomo. {Transportation and probably food will be provided free both for presenters and other students.)
Categories: Creative writing, Essays, Research Papers & Projects, and
Visual Arts {there is a student Art Show). Work must be
related to women's Studies {which includes environment,
aging, ethnicities, children, all kinds of minorities,
handicapped, etc.) .
What to do NOW. Think about your current work. Ask you current instructors about the suitability of specific pieces of your work for presentation at the conference, and about what revisions they think are in order. In general, unless submissions are t oo numerous, each entry recommended by an IUSB instructor will be put on the program. The deadline for submissions is Friday, January 11, 1991. If you want to present work unrelated to your current classes, take it to one of the Women's Studies faculty and ask for a recommendation. If these procedures are unacceptable {or even distasteful) to you, they are subject to change. Bring your criticism to the Women's Studies Club. Students in the W.S. Program have a great deal of power to make changes and institute new directions. Use it!

B250 CELEBRATES 20TH ANNIVERSARY
Spring '91 marks 20 years of B250 . . Some of the guest speake!s ~ho have already agreed to participate are: Dale Spender (from Australia), Leslie Kanes Weisman (feminist architect from New York), Kate Clinton (the lesbian-feminist standup comic), Mary Kay Blakely, Juanita Price, and others. A new play about Emma Goldman and other surprise programs are in store--all on Monday evenings, 7-9:30 P.M. Keep Monday evenings free!
SHARON POLLOCK ON CAMPUS
Sharon Pollock, a Canadian feminist playwright, will be on campus to see the IUSB Theatre's presentation of her prize-winning play Blood Relations, probably during dress rehearsals and for the opening, Decemer 4-8, 1990. During that time, she will visit some classes and be around campus.
Please greet her cordially. Make special efforts to see Blood Relations and to praise our theatre program for sponsoring feminist work. Further information is available from Tom Miller, Division of Arts.
Ms. Pollock's plays have been produced throughout Canada, including one currently performed at the Stratford Festival in Ontario. We are fortunate to have so distinguished an artist on campus.
ROSE TINDER TENDS CENTER
Rose Tinder is the new work-study student in charge of maintaining our files and other materials in the Women's Resource Center, Northside 203. If you need any help flushing out data, ask Rose.
THE NEW MS. MAGAZINE
Finally MS. magazine has become what it always wanted to be. Now that it has no advertisements, it makes no compromises. The two issues out are both highly recommended. It is supported entirely by subscriptions--$40/yr., now at a $30 special. It's worth chipping in and sharing a subscription with friends.
Whoever has borrowed the first MS. from the Women's Resource Center, please return it. Center materials do not circulate so that they are dependably available. "Borrowing" is definitely not politically correct.
