Title
Promotional poster for "Thorns of the Rose" science talks, circa 1987-1988
Description
Promotional poster for "Thorns of the Rose," a series of open public discussions on the impacts of science on human communities. These dialogues were hosted by Indiana University at South Bend (IUSB) and co-sponsored by the Northern Indiana Historical Society.
According to annotations written on the back of the poster, these community-based dialogues were coordinated by IUSB mathematics professor Bill Frascella. According to Frascella, these dialogues occurred from 1987 to 1988; each dialogue had a minimum attendance of sixty people; and the poster was designed by a local artist.
The "Thorns of the Rose" title was a metaphor for the subject matter of the dialogues: the rose represented science, and the thorns were the complexities of social issues that science is embroiled in.
