Title

"B250 Offers Variety for Students" Preface article, 1979 December 5

Description

This is an article published in the Preface about the upcoming Spring 1980 B250 Interdisciplinary Analysis of Women's Role class coordinated by Gloria Kaufman. The article names numerous guest speakers that were planning on speaking in the class, as well as their respective topics. Some of the guest speakers include Madonna Kolbenschlag, Pat McNeal, Samuel Shapiro (Gloria Kaufman's spouse), Madeleine Pabis, and more.
Each year, the lectures in the B250 course were typically open to the public. Women's studies programs across the nation looked to the B250 course as a model for their own courses being developed, which speaks to how successful Kaufman's B250 courses were.

PREFACE, Dec .5, 1979, p.7.

B250 Offers variety for students

The guest speakers for 250 (Interdisciplinary Analysis of Women's Role) come from all over the United States, and they represent many professions and academic disciplines. Leslie Kanes Weisman, whose innovative approaches to architecture are known nation-wide, and who teaches architecture in the east, will speak on " The Sexual Politics of the Man-Made Environment.'' Madonna Kolbenschlag, whose book Kiss Sleeping Beauty Goodbye was just published by Doubleday, will give a talk entitled " From Mythology to Psychology." Samuel Shapiro (History, Notre Dame), who has just returned from the first national conference on black women's history, will talk on "Black Women and the Blues" (with recorded examples). Pat McNeal will lecture on "The Immigrant Woman in the United States." Mai Zetterling's latest film masterpiece will be shown, along with other films and videotapes. Madeleine Pabis, Producer and Director of "Bread and Roses,'' a weekly radio show (WOWO, Ft. Wayne) will speak on . " Fear of Lesbianism.'' Meena Khorana will lecture on "Women and Indian Mythology" Jonelle Farrow will speak to the question, " Sex Role Expectations: Are They Changing?"
Negotiations are still underway for a number of other stimulating speakers on topics that deal largely with the history of women. Social and cultural history is included. B250 is not, however, a course for women only. Men are also encouraged to enroll. The course meets on Mondays and Wednesdays from 2:30-3:45 P. M ., and each guest lecture will be followed by a tea and informal discussion at the Women's Center. (Attendance at the teas is optional) . .
B250 is traditionally open to the South Bend community. People may attend single lectures, if they are interested. The complete calendar (as well as last-minute changes) is posted on the Women's Bulletin outside the IUSB Library.
B250 was designed to give students a sense of ways in which professionals of varying disciplines approach the same subject matter. The course brings in lawyers, psychologists, art historians, artists, social scientists, scientists, theologians, etc. Further information on the course will be posted on the Women's Bulletin Board, as well as a syllabus (as soon as it is available). Gloria Kaufman is co-ordinating the course for Spring 1980. She can be reached in Northside 424 (237-4224) for any questions.
Other guest speakers in the course include Eileen Bender, Collette Moser, Margaret Rossiter, Marjorie Kinsey, and many more to be announced. The course at IUSB has been used as a model by women's studies programs all over the country. Few campuses, however, have been able to sustain a course that has so many guest speakers, and IUSB is fortunate to have such an offering.
