Kaufman chosen IUSB Lundquist Fellow

South Bend External Affairs

Gloria Kaufman, director of the IUSB Women's Studies Program and South Bend's community Women's Resource Center, has been named 1992-93 Eldon F. Lundquist Faculty Fellow at IUSB.
Kaufman is the eighth recipient of the award, which is the most prestigious honor the campus can give to a faculty member. The Fellowship includes a stipend of $2,000 and an expense allowance of $1 ,000.

The Lundquist Fellowship is named in memory of Eldon F. Lundquist, whose contributions to the community of Elkhart included service as a state senator, hospital administrator, banker and special assistant to former IU President John W. Ryan.
Considered a pioneer in women's studies and multicultural academic programs, Kaufman has been instrumental in guiding the Women's Studies Program at IUSB through two decades of growth. It is now one of the oldest such programs in American higher education.
Last year, she orchestrated a series of special guest speakers and events for the program's 20th anniversary. Her friendships and contacts include the luminaries of national feminist/multicultural scholarship and activism, who often come to IUSB to present lectures and seminars.
She has served as chair or member of countless IUSB academic committees, and has been director of the Women's Resource Center in South Bend since 1988. In that capacity she has worked on behalf of the less powerful in society, most of them women and children.
She has also served as chair or member of the Mayor's Advisory Committee on Education, the South Bend Task Force on Employment, the Women's Shelter Advisory Committee, the Women's Institute for Freedom of the Press, the National Women's Health Network, the Working Women's Coalition, the National Women's Political Caucus, the National Women's Studies Association, the New York Academy of Sciences, the Center for New Television, the Association of Independent Video and Filmmakers Inc., and many other organizations.
She has testified at public hearings on behalf of women's rights, and is the author of dozens of scholarly papers on literature and women's issues, as well as four books and a play. She has also produced 14 video documentaries.
Kaufman has been honored by the New York Academy of Science and the Poetry Society of America. Other awards include Outstanding Liberal Arts and Sciences Teacher at IUSB, Doris L. Crockett Gold Medal from the Russell Sage College Alumnae Association, and 1985 Susan B. Anthony Award. In 1982, she was named one of the community's Outstanding Women at the South Bend YWCA's annual Tribute to Women.
