Title

South Bend Watch Company

Description

Three Studebaker brothers built a factory in 1902 for their South Bend Watch Company. In addition to the main plant that stretched more than 450 feet along Mishawaka Avenue, separate buildings were constructed for the dial painting (including the use of radium-26) and the boiler room. The company, Indiana’s only watch manufacturer, closed in 1929. A number of subsequent tenants used the property until July 1957, when fire did so much damage that the only option was to raze the structure. Rebuilt in 1965, it is now the Administration Building for the campus and home to the Leighton School of Business and Economics.
