WHO WAS GLORIA KAUFMAN?
Gloria Kaufman joined the faculty ofIU South Bend in the mid 1960s, when the campus was expanding its reach into the community. In addition to teaching English literature, Kaufinan developed B250, the first Women's Studies course. B250 was a speakers' series open to the public, and brought influential and controversial guest lecturers to campus. It expanded the minds and spurred intellectual curiosity of generations ofIU South Bend students and the South Bend community.

Gloria Kaufman created the Women's Studies program at IU South Bend, which is now Women's & Gender Studies, and has since grown to offer a BA and minor. She established the first Women's Resource Center on the campus and served as affirmative action officer. Besides writing articles in her field-including one on Marge Piercy's use of metaphor -Kaufman edited two anthologies of feminist humor. A filmmaker, she wrote and directed 14 documentaries such as "Women, Ritual, and Religion" and "The Politics of Feminist Humor." Upon retirement, she produced videopoems, short films combining words, music, and images. Gloria Kaufman left a strong, vibrant Women's Studies program at IU South Bend. One of her former students noted that she taught them to "use our power to create kindness." The current Women's & Gender Studies Governing Board embraces the challenge of carrying on her legacy to create kindness and intellectual challenges for present and future IU South Bend students.

OUR 2012 SPEAKER: MARGE PIERCY
Marge Piercy is the critically acclaimed author of 17 novels including classics such as Gone to Soldiers, He, She and It, The Longings of Women and Woman on the Edge of Time. Today she will speak about her book Sex Wars: A Novel of Gilded Age New York, a book that mingles fictional characters with notable historical figures like Susan B. Anthony from the period following the U.S. Civil War. The Boston Globe called it "a big American story ... harsh and enthralling". The book has been studied extensively by Women's and Gender Studies students at IU South Bend.

Piercy is a prolific writer, having produced in addition to her novels 18 volumes of poetry including The Moon is Always Female and the memoir Sleeping with Cats. Her poetry and fiction have inspired, encouraged and sustained feminists and social justice activists over the years. She is originally from Detroit and is a University of Michigan graduate.
