In an era before wide popular acceptance of LGBTQ culture, LGBTQ spaces like the Seahorse on South Bend’s west side showed little or no markings on their buildings. This kept them less visible, especially to those who might violently act against the existence of an LGBTQ space—like local police. For example, this is the second location of the Seahorse. Do you see how the small sign and sea horse picture near the door are the only markings? The first location of the Seahorse was badly damaged, allegedly by arson.
