Indiana University was founded by the Indiana General Assembly on January 20, 1820. What started in Bloomington as Indiana Seminary has grown to a top-ranked university with campuses across the state and with an impact far beyond its borders.
The Bloomington campus attracts students from across the globe, and many graduates choose to live in north central Indiana where they share what they have learned. The South Bend campus (with a center in Elkhart) benefits the local communities through teaching, research and creative activities, and service.
Alumni, faculty, and staff of the university have had a long and productive history. For 200 years, IU has educated, entertained, and engaged the world.
